For her interpretation of a Bauhaus piece of furniture, Kerstin Bruchhäuser deliberately chose the unupholstered D4 chair by Marcel Breuer.‎ Designed as an all-rounder "for ships, sports fields, terraces, summer houses, gardens, garden cafés", the foldable tubular steel club chair with fabric belt upholstery was presented in 1927.‎ Long an icon, Breuer's mobile D4 has been part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art New York since 1980.‎

For her version D4N, Kerstin Bruchhäuser decided to leave the tubular steel frame of the D4 as it was in order to concentrate on the design of the textile belt surfaces - seat, back and armrests.‎

Over a period of three months, she created a patchwork by hand, using the traditional Korean pojagi technique.‎ In this technique, pieces of fabric with distinctive piping are sewn together so that the front and back look almost identical.‎ The result: an aesthetically beautiful textile on both sides.‎

With her interpretation, Kerstin Bruchhäuser points the D4 towards a new future: the mix & match of the different fabrics in Korean sewing technique not only cites the global world, but is also a promise to sustainability.‎ An icon that combines history and zeitgeist in a new way.‎
