It began with an impression reminiscent of Caspar David Friedrich, if it were not anchored in modernity: the young Dutchman Joop Couwenberg observed fishermen taking rubbish out of the sea.‎ Endless tonnes of recyclable material collected to be processed, pressed and shaped into new forms.‎ The idea of extending the life cycles of a product impressed him and he used it as the driving idea for his new object: the cantilever stool.‎

The material the industrial designer and graduate of the Eindhoven University of Technology chose was not plastic, however, but soft, warm cork, which normally crowns wine bottles as a closure.‎ Couwenberg collected corks, found a social institution in Belgium during his research that shredded the material and began experimenting.‎

For the curved tubular steel frame, Couwenberg, who founded his studio in Tilburg, Holland, in 2014, was guided by the functional approaches of Bauhaus.‎ He was fascinated by the idea that had already captivated designers from Mart Stam to Marcel Breuer: the idea of floating, which was combined with the contrast of rigid seating and resulted in an oscillating piece of furniture: the cantilever chair.‎

In the triangular shape of his steel frame, he was consciously guided by the idea that the furniture should be stackable and at the same time take healthy sitting into account.‎
