The seat comprises two layers of thick tanned leather, stitched together to form a single sheet. This process is implemented in Toyooka, Hyogo Prefecture, which is renowned for the manufacture of bags. As the angle and sinkage of the seat depend solely on leather’s tension, its hardness and comfort cannot be adjusted as easily as occurs with urethane cushions or spring-loaded chairs.
Sunset chair offers an enjoyable sitting experience thanks to its delicate balance ensured by the optimal tension of leather. As a natural material, the tanned leather seat will eventually adapt to the body over time. The oak frame is carved out at a chair factory in the Hiroshima Prefecture. The thick tanned leather made in Himeji is cut and sewn in Toyooka, all in the Hyogo Prefecture. This product represents a new type of chair that shows the potential of Japan’s local traditions, carefully manufactured by craftsmen featuring the peculiar characteristics of each regional industry in Japan.
