Included in Cassina’s study of the furnishings of the city of Chandigarh, the Civil Bench in Viennese cane, a tribute to Pierre Jeanneret, is distinguished by sleek shapes and simple materials poised between modern European ideals and the traditional Indian spirit.

Cassina continues its study of the furniture of the city of Chandigarh and adds the Civil Bench to the Hommage à Pierre Jeanneret Collection; a collection that stands out for its essential forms and simple materials, a balance between modern European ideals and traditional Indian spirit. The bench, produced between 1955 and 1956 for the lodgings and apartments of the members of the Indian city’s Legislature Assembly, consists of three consecutive seat elements supported by a single frontal crossbar and two side supports positioned in the shape of an inverted "V". The seat has the typical weaving that recurs in all the Collection, while the Cassina Research and Development Centre proposes two variants for the wooden frame, in natural oak and stained black oak, in addition to the historic teak version, that are produced in the company’s historic carpentry workshop. Optional cushions are available for added protection and comfort.

The original, crafted to furnish the homes of the members of the city’s Legislative Assembly, is composed of a seat with solid wood structure held up by two lateral supports in the shape of an inverted “V”; features that, along with the Viennese cane seat, form the hallmark feature of the entire Collection.

The iconic solid wood bench updated by Cassina retains the historic structure in teak and also comes in natural oak or oak stained black, produced in the company’s acclaimed artisan workshop. An optional cushion may be added for even greater comfort.
